Here are a few samples of work I've done for corporate and consumer publications, newsletters, marketing communications, public relations, trade associations, and non-profit and philanthropic organizations. If you'd like to see full-size samples, or request a printed copy of a particular sample, please contact me. Writing WritingAlgae: America's Next Super Fuel?Feature story for North Bay Business Journal, a monthly publication that covers business activity in the northern San Francisco Bay area. This piece focused on the potential of algae to "polish" wastewater and produce biodiesel fuel as well as its prospects for commercialization. Show Them the MoneyFeature story for Confectioner Magazine, a bimonthly publication aimed at candy buyers, brokers, distributors, and retailers. This investigative piece focused on the contentious issue of supplier purchase allowances; the primary challenge was to write a compelling, informative story despite the refusal of most sources to speak on record. Data Compromise CoverageMarketing brochure for Fireman's Fund Insurance targeting existing business customers as well as new prospects. The brochure clearly and concisely explained why this new coverage was important, offered real examples of data breaches without resorting to hype, and reinforced the company's position as an innovator in the industry. Direct Mail/AdvertisingWhitman & Samuelson Direct Mail CampaignFirst of a series of direct mail postcards for Whitman & Samuelson Insurance Services, designed to elevate its brand recognition and showcase its expertise in providing industry-specific solutions for California businesses faced with a potentially huge increase in workers' compensation costs. Does Your Insurance Have More Bugs Than Your Clients?Co-branded ad produced for Acordia and Fireman's Fund insurance companies which appeared in trade journals and on the Web. The ad highlighted the partnership of Acordia and Fireman's Fund and resulted in a 30-percent increase in calls to Acordia for quotes from pest control operators. NewslettersTopLineE-newsletter for Fireman's Fund Insurance distributed quarterly to 2,500 agents and brokers. I wrote the copy, supervised design, and managed distribution of this award-winning publication, which was perceived as a valuable tool by the internal sales force and received high marks for usefulness and relevance from agents. VisionsNewsletter for the Education for the Future Initiative, produced quarterly for educators, sponsors, and policy makers. I served as editor and chief writer, supervising design and photography, and managing approvals and distribution. The newsletter provided an ongoing "report card" for the initiative, one of the first in California to incorporate Internet access into public elementary schools. Marketing CommunicationsInsurance for Real Estate Owners and ManagersMarketing kit for Fireman's Fund agents and brokers targeting the real estate industry. I wrote the copy for the kit, which included an agent brief, coverage scenarios to be used with customers, a competitive comparison, and a brochure for customers - all the tools and resources necessary to make them experts on the industry. As a result, risk quality improved as did opportunities for cross-sales. Trans-Orient Strategy GuideMarketing kit for Trans-Orient targeting potential investors and clients. The goal was to introduce the company and its senior leaders, describe its exploration portfolio, and highlight its strategy of acquiring oil and gas leases in under-explored but politically stable areas of Austral-Asia. Project ManagementPacific Telesis Foundation Annual ReportBest of Bay award-winning annual report for the Pacific Telesis Foundation. I edited the annual report from 1991-1997, formulating key messages, writing the text, interviewing grant recipients, and managing design and production. The report positioned Pacific Telesis as one of the leading philanthropic organizations in Northern California despite its relatively small size. Committee on the ShelterlessFund-raising brochure describing this community-based organization and its services for the homeless. I consulted with the board of directors, developed the creative concepts, wrote the copy, and managed the work of contract designers and photographers. This full-color, professionally produced piece replaced a black-and-white flier, elevating the organization's visibility. |
"John is talented, reliable, and — most significantly — totally professional. He recently completed a major investigative piece for us and I can't imagine having entrusted a story of this scope to anyone else."
